Araceli's specialisation draws on her life in Castileos with the sea about her at all times and her time in Thedas as a bard, pulling together the two parts of her life to make something new of it. This is her way of trying to drag parts of the bard aspect away from how it's steeped in the Grand Game in Orlais with good pirate traditions, and to make better use of her duelling talents here.

She might not be a mage or have a mark that does much, but she wants to have something she might be able to pass on at least to anyone who comes along to join Naval Presence in some little tradition one day or to say that the bard life needn't be all rules and restrictions. Maybe the whole of the pirate's life isn't for everyone, nor the bard's life, but the skills? Those could save a life.

focus;
  • song of the sea; Araceli chooses a song about the great blue waters of Thedas, of the seas, the voyage that they might go on, wishing fortune for all those who are her crew now whatever they go to face before they go into battle.  She can do this once pre-battle (once a day) and it boosts the willpower of those who fight alongside her.
active;
  • made of knives; instead of just using her rapiers, Araceli uses all those knives people seem to like giving her to hit the vulnerable spots (more effective on those she's fought before, with limits, most effective on humans/elves/dwarves/qunari) // high approval: allies get a damage bonus, low approval: allies less likely to receive severe damage from enemy
  • spit polish; she's got a fancy cane with an anchor that she will absolutely use to sweep the legs out from under fools.  It's classy.  It's civilised.  The Orlesians would approve.
  • braggadocio; Araceli's confidence in a fight intimidates her foes, causing them to panic // upgrade: who does a riposte to a child; killing an enemy in this state grants bonuses for allies, especially if combined with made of knives

passive;
  • sea legs; a life on the docks and by the sea means that she suffers no penalties when moving in those environments; her movement/stamina/speed aren't impacting by difficult water-based or water-adjacent terrain that she moves or fights on // upgrade: down where it's wetter; if her cloak of the manta-ray is worn, she's able to swim faster and do some stabbing under the sea
  • rigging; parkour is good but you know what's better?  Parkour mid-fight using whatever happens to be around you like the ropes, rigging, sails and what have you.  If it's by the docks or a ship or something like that, Araceli's going to use it in a fight // upgrade: swinging reposition; Araceli uses these to literally parkour to a better position mid-fight, so long suckers.
  • part-girl, part-eel; she's a slippery one, that Bonaventura girl, isn't she?  Utilising her cunning and dexterity, Araceli isn't so easily grabbed and if grabbed, it's harder for her to be knocked backwards/prone.  (Subject to acceptable limits because a pride demon or a dragon will still be handing her ass to her on a platter.)
  • chromatophore; knowledge of her surroundings allows Araceli to blend in far better with her surroundings even in the aftermath of a fight making her far more difficult for an enemy to detect, a combination of her bard training and life back home in Castileos around the docks.

ooc: daily schedule

TOO EARLY: Araceli tends to still be up from the night before in the small hours of the morning, either swimming, up on the rooftops or chatting to whatever sailors happen to be around the docks before she goes home to catch an hour or so of sleep.
MORNING: Breakfast and getting ready to leave, stops in on the nuggalope on the way to the Gallows. Meeting with Madame de Cedoux (and possibly Vandelin) about whatever needs doing before heading off to deal with Naval Presence things/checking in on Chantry Relations.
NOON: Tends to have brought her own lunch, picks away at it while practicing the lute; this is usually when the office door is shut.
AFTERNOON: Sleeping! Afternoon is the hottest part of the day at home and Thedas hasn't really broken the habit of a lifetime unless she's away from Kirkwall on missions so she's absolutely asleep at home or in the Gallows, something better be on fire if you're waking her up.
EVENING: Training either with weapons or parkouring around the Gallows then off for a bath. Home to make dinner with Korrin, usually brings some sort of study material back with her.
NIGHT: Has another sleep, might go out with Korrin and/or others if she doesn't have anything to do. Prefers anywhere other than the Hanged Man to gamble and listen to any rumours; more commonly found dicing down at the docks with sailors that she gets on with well honestly.
TOO LATE: Rifter curfew, at home with Korrin and Lux and awake unless she's exhausted and asleep.

INQUISITION DUTIES: Heads up the Naval Presence project, Madame de Cedoux's attache in Diplomacy, and recently joined Chantry Relations; a pretty ambitious rifter who still manages to keep her head down
OTHER/PERSONAL PROJECTS: Is a bard and will also teach you parkour if it's in a location where you won't be noticed and/or before the curfew since she's a rifter and she's keeping the curfew.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS: The sea, sailing, swimming, sea creatures especially the more terrifying and horrific they might sound to other people. Generally enjoys learning (she's a bard, she files everything away) and is big into gambling either for fun or profit, mainly card or dice games.

ooc: bard life

bard spec

the perils of bard life

The Masked Empire;

The masks were part of the Game, the ruthless and endless contest by which dynasties were founded and lost in Orlais, and the Chantry’s insistence that their people go unmasked was meant to suggest that they were beyond politics. It was a suggestion that few in Orlesian nobility took seriously.

“Of course, Your Radiance.” Nightingale sat, moving with a casual grace and coming to rest with her simple robes unwrinkled and unbunched. The subtle series of movements was the mark of a trained bard, and Celene filed the observation away for use as needed.

Leliana laughed the delicate cultured laugh of a noblewoman or trained bard. The effect made her sister’s robes look like a poor disguise.

It could have been nothing more than that, of course, but in Val Royeaux, everything was part of the Game, even the clandestine affairs of the more important servants. Briala had grown up watching the Game, and as one of Celene’s pieces, she was determined to win.

Celene steeled herself without any outward change of expression. She had played the Game for most of her life. No matter how prepared she was, no matter how much she had considered and planned and determined her strategy, there was always one moment of fear.

The most famous spies in Orlais were the bards. They were legendary for their ability to ferret out information, to lay intrigue and dissemble with skill enough to turn nobles to their purposes. They were invited to play despite this, and sometimes even because of it. The lords and ladies who played the Game always fancied themselves cunning enough to match wits with a master of lies and learn something from the exchange. But even as the bards outplayed the nobles, they were watched. They were famous. They were legendary.

Leliana looked away. She had been trained as a bard, so every movement she made was likely deliberate, but Celene thought that her discomfort was genuine.

She was at the edge of the clearing in the firelight a fortnight later, running through a set of drills that Lady Mantillon had called the Butterfly while Felassan and Michel plotted tomorrow’s ride, when Briala said from behind her, “You’re off on the second strike.”

Celene stopped and looked over her shoulder, hiding with a close-mouthed smile how sadly out of breath the exercises had left her. Briala had stripped off her armor and looked tired, dirty … and still lovely nevertheless, even as little more than a shadow kissed with golden light from the campfire.

It was the first time that Briala had spoken to Celene beyond the simple logistics of which trail to follow or when to take the rabbit off the fire. Celene had given her lover her space, waiting for a sign.

“I don’t believe so,” Celene said, keeping her voice calm and non-argumentative. “The lead hand parries the incoming thrust, and the back hand slashes across the upper arm to stop a counterattack before you move in to control the throat with both blades.”

She demonstrated in the air, her daggers catching the firelight as she slid them through the air against an imaginary opponent. There was no actual fire on the blades—she had removed all her magical tokens to get a better sense of how far out of practice she was.

“No.” Briala slid her own daggers out with unconscious grace, then sliced through the air. “The first isn’t just a parry. It’s a slash to the enemy’s wrist. The second strike isn’t to his striking arm. It’s to the throat.” Her strike was higher than Celene’s had been, a fast flick of the wrist whose grace and deceptive beauty gave the Butterfly its name. “That ensures that you’re in close enough to control the throat with your next move.”

“You’re certain? You always preferred Lady Mantillon’s archery lessons to the knife-work.”

“But I have used both,” Briala said. “And it is the throat.”

Celene smiled. “If you’ve already slashed their throat, controlling it hardly seems necessary.”

“Armor?” Briala asked. “Or magical protection? Or if you’re facing a darkspawn with tougher skin, or some creature from the Fade? Or if you’re using a peasant’s belt knife instead of a gleaming silverite blade because you’ve lost your throne?” She stepped in closer, and anger touched her face, drawing lines on her beautiful skin. “Things in the real world are often not as perfect as they are in the palace at Val Royeaux.”

Then, because Briala had been right, Celene went back to practicing, and aimed her second strike higher.

Celene stepped back, a simple, prudent move that put a stone sarcophagus between her and Gaspard and also put Briala more clearly in her line of vision. Briala had an arrow nocked in her bow, raised but not drawn. As Celene glanced over, Briala tapped her bow with her little finger. Anyone not trained in the bardic arts would have simply thought it the nervous gesture of a sloppy fighter.

From one bard to another, Briala’s gesture meant, “Encourage them to approach.”

Gold on the Ceiling - The Black Keys
They wanna get my
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain't blind
Just a matter of time
Before you steal it
It's alright
Ain't no guard in my house

Glory and Gore - Lorde
Delicate in every way but one (the swordplay)
God knows we like archaic kinds of fun (the old way)
Chance is the only game I play with, baby
We let our battles choose us

Bravado - Lorde
'Cause I was raised up
To be admired to be noticed
But when you're withdrawn it's the closest thing
To assault when all eyes are on you
This will not do

[...]

I'm faking glory
Lick my lips toss my hair
And turn the smile on
And the story's brand-new
But I can take it from here
I'll find my own bravado

In the Stars - Icona Pop
Got a horseshoe in my pocket
And my hands are full of gold
My heart's racing like a rocket,
Wind it up and watch it go
We'll be ruling in the sunlight
Like we're pharaohs on the throne
We'll be dancing in the moonlight,
Dancing all the way back home

Armada - The Virgin Queen OST

Instrumental

Summersong – The Decemberists
My girl, linen and curls
Lips parting like a flag all unfurled
She's grand the bend of her hand
Digging deep into the sweep of the sand

Summer arrives with a length of lights
Summer blows away
And quietly gets swallowed by a wave
It gets swallowed by a wave

Pirate in the Water - Santigold
There's a pirate in the water
There's a price to pay tonight (yeah)
On the dock, the sea looks smooth
But it's tainted in the light (yeah)
Fear not the holes you're sinkin' into
Don't let 'em take you like the buccaneers do

You Are Free - HUMANWINE
I am a sailor on these waves I am enraged by the injustice all around us it surrounds us affecting us all
This place that we go, shed our ego and eat off of our own plate
An old tradition it's our kitchen and it's always open late
We dine on all the stories of our kind
They fill our mouths and we wash them down with wine

In the Sea - Ingrid Michaelson
No no don't rescue me
I like the salt water sting
It feels so good to feel
It feels so good just to feel something
In the sea in the sea in the sea in the sea

Navigate - Band of Skulls
Everybody's back in town
Give me the armour and let me prepare
It can be easy or difficult, to steer
The heart and breath stops death, cheats death
It's clear
Time and tide wait for no man
Slowly realise as fast as you can
Thought I saw a glimpse of how you were at five
Ain't it strange how these things take you by, surprise

We are drifting on a deep sea
And I can't navigate the stars like my father
Oh we're drifting out to sea
Into deep water
If we're scared it puts us under

Sail - Vitamin String Quartet
Instrumental

Song of the Sea - Cake Bake Betty
Startin' to breathe so heavily
Grandpa's telling me of his days in the Navy
I was alive for a moment you see
It was there when I woke
It was there when I would—

Maybe I'm meant for the sea
It's there swinging from my family tree
Maybe I'm meant for the sea
Grandpa Albert had it made for me

Swimming - Florence and the Machine
Rotting like a wreck on the ocean floor,
Sinking like a siren that can't swim anymore
'Cause our songs remind me of swimming,
But I can't swim anymore

Pull me out the water, cold and blue,
I open my eyes and I see that it's you,
So I dive straight back in the ocean
So I dive straight back in the ocean

ooc: cr chart | thread tracker

Sirena;
Korrin Ataash, together since First Day 9:42 Dragon, necklace of the kadan exchanged, mermaid ring exchanged, living together in Skyhold and Kirkwall. Working naval presence together

Amigos;
Samouel Gareth; easy to get along with, fun to laugh with. Working naval presence together
Ellana Ashara; taught her dice and lying, Ellana taught her of Dalish lore, thus a friendship was struck
Leonard Church; rifter friend, darling heart she loves you so much you are a wonderful man and you make her smile, believe in yourself like she believes in you
Beleth Ashara; fellow bard, needs to step out of the shadow of her mother or whatever desires her mother has for her to lead her own life in Araceli's opinion
Anders; she wants to help the mages and Anders wants to help the mages, sometimes it can be as simple as that when you're young, also helped heal her and get her back to her own room after Craintellier. Also part of the rescue of mages from Dairsmuid
Alistair; gave her modern underwear, automatically a friend for this gesture
Inessa Serra; attempted not to kill the Fereldan with spicy food, introduced The Walrus to Garahel the mabari, talked mage stuff
Cosima Niehaus; Craintellier was a really fun time but Cosima has attempted to explain science to Araceli over cards and Araceli is really here for it
Herian Amsel; kindness is rare but never unappreciated when it costs so little.  Since Herian's returned to the Inquisition they've finally started to use first names, confiding in one another more about serious matters as well as Araceli agreeing to help with a more off the books project of Herian's.
Petrana; Madame de Cedoux to give the lady her correct title. Someone dear that reminds her of Leandra, head of diplomacy and who knows Araceli's full story. Trusted completely, she has her full support and her blade.
Gwenaelle Vauquelin; who would have thought a chance to pick up books for etiquette would have lead to them realising how much they have in common re: discontent with the Inquisition's conduct?
Nahariel Dahlasanor; Sina's clansister, she doesn't know her just so well but she wants to be there for her as Sina slips away, sharing memories and trying to support one another.  Stayed with Araceli and Korrin for a time after not coping with Sina's passing.
Fenris; great at cards, fun to speak with, the person you bring when you need to win over pirate captains.
Skadi Iceblade; an Avvar warrior met on the island adventure, they went fishing together and talked a great deal.  Araceli's very grateful for how much Skadi told her about Avvar culture.
Benevenuta Thevenet; always Lady Thevenet, a brief few meetings but an air of grace not easily forgotten.  Now that Benevenuta is back, Araceli couldn't be happier to have someone else who understands the level of idiocy around this place.
Melys; Melys let her explain her love of the sea to you. In complete detail. Working naval presence together.  Cares about Melys a lot and her whole deal, likes getting to show how she cares and how Melys shows she cares, they need to hang out more.

A passing face;
Maedhros; elven rifter she met during the island escape, asked to monitor him by Gwenaelle.  Slightly alarmed by his reaction when he found out she was a bard.
Fingon; elven rifter she met in Llomerryn, enjoyed talking music with him.
Gabriel Reyes; a human rifter she met and chatted with on the island.
Rey; another rifter from space, definitely going to teach her to swim so they can have the best parkour adventures!  They bonded more at the docks after Sina's passing about a lot of things, she's someone Araceli's glad she knows.
Teren von Skraedder; a Warden with reputation, incredible at catching thieves.
Loghain Mac Tir; Araceli takes people as she finds them, and though she's aware of the tales of Loghain, she couldn't have done without him during the events on the island when they tackled sea serpents together.  Loghain obliged her in bringing one back to shore so she could sketch it, and for that she's grateful.
Simon Ashlock; a Templar met on the journey to the island, seems to be very fond of the sea so Araceli can absolutely get behind that
Luwenna Coupe; a Templar she spoke with about fish, her particular set of skills, and that yes, Castileos is partly below the waves you heard that right Ser Coupe.
Fern Doirnáin; a young elven mage she distubred in the stables and now wants to take under her wing. Some things struck so close to the bone for Araceli when it came to how other people can treat you for not being like them. And getting to open Fern's eyes to the fact that you can happily be in a long term relationship with a woman was a wonderful feeling.
Saoirse Ceallach; an enchanter and friend of Herian's, attended their joint birthday party.
Marisol Vivas; an Antivan mage who assumed Araceli was a native when they had a complicated political discussion at the start.  Someone she wishes to know better but it's going to be complicated.
Julius; enchanter, head of the Corypheus project.  Ambitious and motivated.  Araceli agreed to aid with anything she learns from Llomerryn on Tevinter movements.

Work friends;
James Norrington; Templar who has been a very good source of information, helped in the rescue of mages from Dairsmuid. Working naval presence together
Malcolm Reed; the Seeker, also a very good source of information with an unexpected sense of humour. Helped to rescue mages from Dairsmuid. Working diplomacy together
Val de Fonce; Orlesian university bro of apparently a million things, actual swordtail. Working naval presence together
Vandelin Elris; elven mage with a good sense of humour.  Her fellow attache.  Working diplomacy together.

It's Complicated;
Cade Harimann; she's trying really hard to understand multiple points of view here and get to know him as a person okay
Christine Delacroix; first to examine her shard, healed her after the Craintellier kidnapping, a true friend she cares for deeply. After a disagreement where Araceli and Christine differed on important matters of worry and weaponing it, Araceli no longer considers Christine a friend or someone she can trust.
Adalia; it's incredibly frustrating when people don't listen when you've been through the whole getting dragged off a wall to be interrogated as to your allegiances, been here over two years, and been kidnapped for being what you are but a dragon is a dragon, and a rifter is a rifter.  Parading one around even when you think that saying he's safe and friendly won't change that that's a fucking dragon Adalia.

Enemigo;
tba

Gone but not forgotten;
Martel; first death of someone close to her, called her little monster and other affectionate names, threatened to take a cane to the back of her knees, taught her not to be afraid of her hand, how does she repay that debt? Left a line of credit to be used wisely for her future
Zevran Arainai; practically family, a reminder of home through a dark mirror, let her be the little sister for a change
Mia Rutherford; a lady she would have done so many things for, misses her greatly
Bruce Banner; a gentle man she liked to horrify with her tales of dealing with her injuries back home, owes him greatly for his care after the Craintellier kidnapping
Merrill; Dalish friend, sweet and gentle, helped rescue her from Craintellier
Ruby Lucas; tortured and forced to turn on them during the Craintellier kidnapping, forgave her instantly because it wasn't her even if Araceli will always have the scar
Marcel Gerard; once upon a time they tried to forge an identity for the rifters but when he left Araceli chose a different path but it was still worthwhile work done together
Adelaide LeBlance; always Madame LeBlanc, taught her a great many things she'll use wisely in the future, likely exasperated her with some of her beliefs but she was fond
The Outsider; literally the sea, how could she not instantly love him and be at peace? Thedas is all the poorer for him being gone
Kas; basically family, it's complicated now when Kas has maybe never been real but she can't set aside all the time they did have together
Stannis Baratheon; one encounter but what a prick (enemigo)
Leliana; Sister Nightingale, instructor in the bardic arts, reports to her principally, a lot to live up to (mentor)
Alan Fane; an odd young man, she has no idea if she helped or hurt what she tried to do explaining things but his painting was beautiful
Waver Velvet; interesting mage friend who provided her with cooking herbs in Kirkwall, extremely intrigued by his world and happy to share her own with him
Iskandar; head of forces, new boss naval presence reports to. Disagrees with how he conducts himself. Thinks he's something of a sea lion
Kattrin; Avvar exile and healer, gentle but she troubled Araceli with her story
Jamie McCrimmon; one of the only remaining original batch of rifters, someone she can relax around and tease, fascinated by his bagpipes, went through Craintellier with him
Sina Dahlasanor; one of her very first friends, worries frequently for her health and loves her dearly, attended her wedding.  There when Sina finally succumbed to her shard.
Jim Kirk; cards and banter, part of the group to rescue mages from Dairsmuid
Pel Ashara; exchanged etiquette lessons with her some time back, they've gone shopping together several times and discussed the general...everything of Thedas and why it's unfair. Provided Araceli with a cane after Craintellier
Kithan Gandir; dwarven head of Other Powers, easygoing, dating Vandelin.  Died in Kirkwall.
Avery; a cook with a sense of humour Araceli appreciates, but not someone she wants to be caught stealing by.  The person that didn't get taken during the Craintellier ambush.  She did enjoy that card game though.
Sarkan; a rifter met on the island however not an arrival.  Found a magical book together in the ruins that came from his homeland that provoked an alarming reaction.  Someone to watch.

Status

Offers free running lessons down by the stables and other areas upon request. She's known to be sharing rooms at Skyhold with Councillor Korrin Ataash; gifts have been exchanged and many parties know that they're together.

Often in the library where she spends hours either studying or writing letters back home, frequently noted to be studying Thedosian history, politics and culture, as well as heraldry.

Also seems to have taken up learning the lute and using the rooftops to drop into the rookery.

Has an office in Kirkwall for running Naval Projects though she's just as often found down at the docks to actually get the work done and build up a reputation appropriately, also living there with Korrin Ataash.

Offers parkour lessons either at the Gallows or elsewhere in Kirkwall depending on skill levels.

Reputation

That one girl that likes to hang out in the back of the tavern with her fox drinking up all the rum and the brandy but little else. Also that one girl who will absolutely play cards or dice with you. And the one that offers parkour lessons because we're stuck up a mountain and she needs to do something to keep herself from going spare. Also wow does she love the sea.

That girl that will chase you down to sign something, hanging out with the sailors laughing and dicing, the girl up on the rooftops who seems to know a bit too much about how all these pieces work for a thief-turned-bard since she fell through a rift into Thedas. Also wow does she love the sea.

Hooks

Interested in gambling for fun or for profit? She's your girl. You want to go on a heist? Let her share her experiences and that one time she almost got shot in the ass. Fancy learning all about sailing? Sit yourself down with the good brandy, sailing is in her blood. Want to get your parkour on? Find some sensible shoes, stretch it out and go for it because she taught herself so how hard can teaching someone else be?

No but really, she's a former thief who became a guard, a young woman who reveres the sea and believes in doing the right thing to help those less fortunate than herself, despising those who take advantage of the poor and the weak. Basically a musketeer in all but name, daughter of a pirate and a holy prostitute, Araceli's always up for helping those who need it, for sneaking in to get the goods especially when it's dangerous and for letting her hair down and having fun.

She's also a giant flirt. She'll flirt with everyone. Especially the ladies, you need to be the most exceptional of men for her to really go beyond any flirting but if you're here for someone who'll flatter your ego and pay you plenty of compliments she'll be happy to oblige.

Exceptional at gathering information without really appearing as if she's doing it; after all, she's new and confused, she simply wishes to understand. Invested in the idea of rifters being a group since she has the suspicion that they'll be lumped together as is and makes sure that there's information for any arrivals that require it. Araceli is Inquisition first, has been Inquisition first for a long time and she will drag you all kicking and screaming if she must into realising that you can live and die by your reputations because sometimes that's the only thing you have and the people have to see you be what you must be even when you're the furthest damn thing from it. (Also it's called having having bravado in the streets and anxiety in the sheets but whatever.)

Approval & Gifts

APPROVES
+ support the common folk
+ flirting
+ supporting mage freedom
+ supporting elven rights
+ joking/gambling with her
+ political shark shenanigans
+ feed her
+ love of the sea/seafaring lifestyle
DISAPPROVES
- supporting idle nobility
- supporting the Circle
- supporting the Qun
- threatening her friends
- killing people that surrender
- racism
- blindly following 'the way things are' without question
- disrespecting the sea/pirates

GIFTS
Araceli likes gifts in general, more for the sentiment than the object itself but that being said, there are absolutely gifts that she prefers over anything else. Sea-related objects - shells, sea or beach glass, interesting stones. She adores jewellery, usually just strange looking bits and pieces, wood, shells, stones etc rather than any particular metal. Hair oil is another big one, interesting small blades, any sort of eyeliner. Her favourite gift would be a ship in a bottle.

Name: Mhairi
Age: 26

Other Characters: n/a
Interests: Exploration! Araceli's naturally curious and prone to sneaking around thanks to years as a thief and her time as a guard, playing around with the politics and the grey-on-grey conflicts of the Dragon Age setting with someone entirely removed from it attempting to find common ground sounds like fun, especially all the cultural confusion and playing politics. I've always liked doing background information gathering and sneaking around to find out things that help the plot in games before and I think given everything about Inquisition and the setting that it'd be great to get to play it with so many other characters in the game.

CHARACTER

Name: Araceli Bonaventura (full name:  Araceli Bonaventura y Castell)
Canon/OC: Original
Journal: [personal profile] foxsays
Age: 20

History

world info; it explains things that are too wordy given the history limit.
  • Daughter of a pirate (Felix) and a courtesan (Neria), Araceli lived her early life running around the main island of Castileos, taught lessons by a tutor in the brothel and also around her father's ship whenever he was in port. When not at those places, she spent her time hanging around with a group of young thieves.
  • Whilst often away, her father usually had his friends keeping an eye on Araceli when it was known that she roamed, including the woman who taught her the finer points of duels and shooting. She picked up gambling very young from the brothel and docks and taught herself how to scramble around rooftops. Her father was the one to gift her Lux, her pet fox and constant companion.
  • At fifteen she left home to move into the artisan distract, setting up shop as a thief and fence, earning a reputation as impossible to catch. She stole mainly from nobles if she wasn't sneaking into the beds of their wives or daughters.
  • Most of her thieving was for the thrill of it, not the coin and she took bigger and more risky jobs because she loved the planning and the rush of pulling a heist off. Most of her coin ended up going to feeding her hungry artist neighbours.
  • At nineteen, running low on excitement, she planned to sneak into the royal palace to steal the queen's jewels, spending a whole month casing it; she was watched as any stranger would be thanks to the queen's spies and they made it their business to learn of her.
  • Upon sneaking into the palace, she made it to the royal apartments where she found the queen attacked by assassins that she quickly dispatch before the queensguard arrived. Instead of punishment, she was rewarded: a spot on the queensguard was hers, the first Castilean (all others were from neighbouring countries as an alliance system) and the first commoner.
  • Time in the queensguard was rough at first as the noble daughters resented her and looked down on her but she won their friendship in time, helping to ease their homesickness but she was closest of all to the queen, an advisor on how it truly was for common folk. Araceli was her eyes and ears, even disguising Leandra so she could see all she wished to. Rumours swirled of the closeness of the queen and her guards at this time.
  • It was when Araceli and Leandra were close to becoming lovers that the queen confessed all to her: that she had known of Araceli, that she'd had her followed and had spoken to her father as he bore letters of marque from her hand. The other queensguard had been hidden and allowing her into the palace had been a test, an existing assassin plot tweaked so Leandra could exploit a loophole to appoint a commoner to her guard. Araceli was even more proud to have been trusted and swore to serve loyally for the rest of her days.

Personality

Friendly, loyal, witty, charming and not one to back down from a challenge, Araceli is very much the 'typical' Castilean citizen.

With parents who supported and nurtured her, allowing her the freedom to make mistakes whilst letting her know she always had them as a safety net, she grew up with confidence and more independence than most. She was encouraged to make her own path in life, her parents offering the right sort of lessons she might need and, upon realising how much she loved a challenge, setting her lessons in a way that appealed to that competitive streak in her.

Araceli has the strong religious beliefs of Castilean citizens: she believes that the sea is a holy place, that their royalty have the blood of the merfolk in their veins; the sea is in her blood, the way it's in everyone's blood because the sea offers life. The thought of drowning isn't one that scares her – the sea will reclaim her and when that moment comes, she won't be the one to argue. This is why she didn't even hesitate when she saw the queen being attacked by an assassin.

The last year of her life, amongst the nobility and the queensguard has exposed Araceli much more to the attitudes of those in other lands, the ones who have less guarded tongues than sailors at docks who need to stay friendly if they want to get good prices for their wares. It was the first time she was ever made to feel small for being 'the get of a pirate and his whore' according to her fellow queensguard, letting her realise that Castileans can often be seen as very odd people compared to the rest of Terradeos.

With the kind of parents she had, she learned how to read people; sometimes you defuse a situation with humour or flattery, sometimes drinks and a few hands of cards or dice, sometimes with a duel or sometimes you back down and regroup. They're valuable lessons for both a thief and a guard, the lessons that have kept her alive.

Underneath all her smiles, she can have a temper, one that can seemingly explode out of nowhere like a sudden storm, usually if someone tries to make her feel small or speaks casually of hurting others or not caring of them. It happens most when nobles or the wealthy dismiss the claim of commonfolk, washing their hands of them which is something she can't abide at all. It can take her a few days to calm down, usually off on her own by the sea or the ship graveyards to think.

When it comes to strangers, she can lie and cheat, but to those she loves, she feels horrendously guilty about it, even if it's a lie to protect them. In her view, she's not being loyal to them if she lies and it's the one tell she actually has because she can't look at them while she does it.

Strengths & Weaknesses

+ strong swimmer, knows her way about a ship, reads a compass, map and stars comfortably (well, if she actually knows the stars)
+ knows her way about flintlock pistols, rapiers, throwing knives
+ incredible balance - she's great at parkour on land and on ships
+ sneaky; she knows how to stick to the shadows, how to listen and watch well, how to read a person
+ not many locks are safe for her if she has the time to work away at them
+ knows her way about a deck of cards and a cup of dice, a handy thing to know when sometimes winning a few hands gets you coin or information
+ reads and writes well, she knows a bit about history, politics, philosophy and naturalistics (the term for the life sciences in her verse)
+/- loyal to a fault, to the point she can't lie well to people she cares for even if it's to protect them or herself
+/- relies on her agility and speed in a fight, if someone were to come at her with heavy blows while she was alone for long she'd have to run
+/- loves a challenge, this can make her really helpful where others might pass an opportunity up but it can also have her doing something a bit too reckless
- small and light, she can't take heavy blows and wielding heavy weapons is pretty impossible
- soft-hearted; her love of her home and culture can see her being hugely hurt whenever it's mocked
- her love of the sea can lead to her feeling homesick if she's kept far from it for too long
- lover of shiny things; she still likes to steal, usually a few coins, a piece of jewellery etc just to keep her skills sharp
- blunt; she might know how politics works and there are times she bites her tongue but she talks the same way to people, tending not to hide behind metaphors or flowery phrases

1 x knife
Guard uniform and boots

Fit

With a broad set of skills, Araceli would likely fall back on them to keep from being out of her depth. She’s been away to sea in terrible storms and deadly calms and kept her head, she’s learned to be around the highest society and the lowest and to get about without being seen so she’d use all of that to help her find her feet. Her job involves watching and listening, as did her prior years as a thief so she often makes sure she can learn enough about a situation before getting involved in anything. The hardest part for her would be being away from the sea but having magic in her hand and understanding what it can do along with the death of the original Inquisitor would convince her that she could make a difference to the common folk; if the Inquisition is for all, she’d believe it should start with them before any nobles or the Chantry.

Coming from a world where the closest thing to magic is consulting old wise women and looking for signs in waves and other forms of scrying along with more folklore styled beliefs about the sea, Araceli would have a different opinion of the mages and templars, finding both the good and bad in each of them. Having to cope with actually having a form of magic will probably take getting used to at first, once she actually understands what it is, more for it distracting her when she’s climbing or shooting at first. Getting to broaden her horizons about the different racial issues in the setting would also really help her character growth as she’s usually the one explaining customs to the foreign queensguard girls.

SAMPLES

Action spam in which she meets her first Qunari and starts hitting on her. As you do.

log;
Two boys had watched her climb the crumbling tower at the top of the village not long after she’d arrived, loose stone and mortar always threatening to give way under her fingers until she’d finally hauled herself up and over the rotting wood that had once been a floor of the tower, when most of the tower was still around. It was the highest point she’d found in the village that wasn’t amidst the press of worried people, well, apart from a more grand building that had a robed woman standing by it; she knew enough to know it was religious, that appeared to translate well across lands, something about the tone of her voice as she spoke about things Araceli didn’t understand. So she’d looked around for somewhere else tall that wasn’t one of the cliffs because she could climb up buildings, masts and rigging fine but the hills were another sort of challenge and had settled on the crumbling old tower. The chest, lock eaten by rust, wood warped from wind and rain, had been opened at some point and sat sad and empty as she stretched up on her tiptoes before closing it and using it for some extra height as she climbed as high as she dared.

The boys stared, mouths gaping wide and despite herself she smiled and saluted until they scurried off.

“Little boys don’t want to see a woman breaking her neck,” she muttered to herself, cursing when she almost lost her footing.

She’d confirmed once and for all that no, this really wasn’t home at all and she’d somehow found herself here, being woken by an old man shaking her with an oar digging into her back, the names Redcliffe and Hinterlands meaning little. But the people had been worried, eyeing her with more than the unease they gave a strange face and she’d seen no pistols so she’d hidden her own. Even the swords seemed different - not even the flashiest duellists wore theirs on their backs at home and these swords looked big, some as big as her even.

Carefully, she climbed down, sliding the last few feet following the curve and upon spying two little faces peeking from behind the bushes she dropped into a low flourishing bow, winking as they turned red and ran. Once they were gone the smile slipped from her face as she sighed, rising up on her toes to catch sight of the calm waters; they could call the taven The Gull and Lantern all they liked but it wasn’t a sailor’s tavern, not really, and the only boats were sad little rowing boots like the one she’d woken from, nets piled about and smelling of fish. There was no roar of waves and wheeling gulls, no stalls selling the catch of the day and even the buildings were all wrong, sad drab brown wood. True, not everywhere at home was made of stone but they were always brightly painted, not with whatever they’d added to the walls here, the strange bears and stags and other things that made her look away with how strange they were.

Like her hand.

Her glowing hand.

She pressed her fingers down against it again, hissing at something that felt like a bruise mixed with a sting from a jellyfish, drawing her fingers back with another curse. Waking up in a boat with a green hand was almost a joke amongst sailors and pirates but the hand never glowed in the story although it certainly bothered her just as much as it did the other afflicted.

“Leandra would want you to go to the tavern and listen,” she told herself, ignoring the looks people gave her because she’d learned that more of them were concerned for their purses in the face of a strange girl they couldn’t decide a name for (Antiva sounded closest, based on what she’d heard, but parts of Rivain sounded so much like her father that it made her heartsick). “She’d tell you to sit there and have a few drinks and buy a round, make them laugh and play cards. If it was for her, no matter where you were you wouldn’t miss it.”

At least if she had a drink she might forget for a moment how she felt lost for the first time in her life.
